Marine Harvest Staying Afloat in Rough Waters

Marine Harvest ASA achieved an operational EBIT of MNOK 55 in the first quarter, compared to MNOK 49 in the corresponding quarter last year.

The Norwegian, Canadian and Scottish operations, all showed good operational improvements. Harvesting of small ISA-affected fish in Chile lead to significant losses in this business unit. Currency effects had a positive impact on revenues and financial items, but a negative impact on EBIT.

Skretting Reports Big Reduction in Salmon Fish Meal

Results from a series of salmon feeding trials run by Skretting Aquaculture Research Centre (ARC) revealed a new low limit for fishmeal in salmon grower feeds.

The trials, conducted on fish from 1 to 5 kg, showed excellent growth and a low feed conversion rate (FCR) on salmon given feed with 15 per cent fishmeal and no land animal protein, reports SkrettingNews.

New Project to Prevent the Escape of Fish

SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture have been awarded a major European Union 7th Research Framework project to tackle the problem of fish escaping from aquaculture throughout Europe.

The escape of fish from sea-cage aquaculture is perceived as a threat to natural biodiversity in Europe's marine waters. Escapes of fish from sea-cages have been reported for almost all major species presently cultured across Europe, including Atlantic salmon, Atlantic cod, rainbow trout, Arctic charr, halibut, sea bream, sea bass and meagre.

UAE, Japan Unite on Bluefin Farming

The UAE Ministry of Water and Environment has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kinki University in Japan to cultivate Pacific bluefin tuna in the UAE.

“This is the first collaboration of this type between Japan and the UAE,” Senator Hiroshige Seko, also Deputy Chairman of Kinki University, told Khaleej Times. According to the news organisation, he noted that traditional relations for both countries were primarily on the oil and financial sectors.

ISA Drags Nutreco Fish Feed Sales Under

Nutreco's fish feed sales fell 6.6 per cent this quarter by comparison with that of last year. Once again, ailing results are being attributed to the ISA crisis unfolding on Chile's salmon farms.

The revenue in Fish Feed decreased by 6.6 per cent to €189.4 million compared with Q1 2008. The volume decline is mainly related to continuing health challenges in the Chilean fish farming market. As a consequence of the ISA virus in Chile the industry had to downscale farming operations which impacted on the volumes. A volume growth is expected in other salmon farming areas such as Norway and Canada.
