Fish farms will have discounts of up to 90 pct in electricity prices
Fish farmers in the northern region of Brazil will enjoy discounts in energy prices up to 80 and 90 per cent, a measure which has already been implemented in the agricultural sector.
Resolution 414 (9 September 2010), the negotiations conducted by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) with the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), has resulted in the aquaculture industry finally being recognized as a farming activity.
Aquaculture production grew by 43 per cent in Brazil in the period between 2007-2009, placing aquaculture as the fastest growing national activity, as reported by the Ministry of Fisheries.
The new measure favors farmers, as "they can offer people healthy food, which is in high demand, at a competitive price," said Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Altemir Gregolin.
Resolution 414 from ANEEL establishes that fish farmers receive special discounts on their electricity consumption rates, subject to three conditions:
First, consumer units should be reviewed by the National Interconnected System (SIN), which is currently responsible for the provision of 96.6 per cent of energy in the country.
Second, consumers can not record debt, and finally, the benefits must be applied through writing.
The Resolution encourages two consumer groups, named A and B, as consumption of high and low voltage, respectively.
The discount will be applied in a continuous daily period of 8 hours 30 minutes. The power distributor has the option to set the schedule for the commencement of the activity in concert with the respective consumers.
The discounts offered to group A are slightly higher and reach 90 per cent of the total consumption in the Northeast states of Espírito Santo and the municipalities of the Jequitinhonha Valley or the northern state of Minas Gerais, including the operational area of the Northeast Development Agency (Aden).
In the same coverage area, the discount is 73 per cent for group B.
In the Northern, Middle East and the rest of municipalities in Minas Gerais, group A will have discounts of 80 per cent, while Group B will get a 67 per cent.
In other regions the discounts are 70 per cent for high voltage projects and 60 per cent for low voltage.
